This course is available for private, on-site delivery

Course Description

Prerequisites SGML 101TM or equivalent experience Hands-on experience creating DTDs and SGML applications Hands-on experience creating DTDs and SGML Applications
Format Lecture and hands-on workshop
Audience Document analysts, text programmers, technical managers, project leaders who have experience with SGML. This course is designed to take students to a deeper understanding of more subtle SGML concepts. This knowledge is vital to implementing a document management system that incorporates SGML.
Objectives
  • Learn about more advanced topics in the SGML standard
  • Be able to anticipate where technical problems might occur in an SGML implementation
  • Learn techniques for managing DTD development and maintaining corporate document structures
  • Understand the importance of the parser, and why it is an essential part of any SGML implementation
Description Basic SGML syntax is very easy. There are two or three basic declarations that can be taught in a short time. This is usually enough for someone to get started understanding how to create document type definitions and start making SGML documents. From this basic understanding of SGML syntax, a student can learn independently about other declarations and extend his or her knowledge.

However, there is a gap between what is generally possible to understand through this type of hands-on knowledge extension and grasping the finer points of the SGML standard.

In Architag University's SGML 101TM course, we discuss basic syntax and a general philosophy about SGML, giving the student a basic understanding of both topics. SGML 301(Beyond the Basics) teaches you the finer points of SGML and goes further in discussing the implementation issues of SGML.

You learn about topics ranging from the problems encountered in mixed content models to the vagaries of white space, from subdocument parsing to intelligent notation processing, and how your decision to use these features affects the implementation of your SGML system.

Topics covered include parameter entity use, content model management, marked section processing, the role of processing instructions, entity management, real-world differences between SGML and XML, implementation factors of markup-based content management, and a discussion on the various phases found in an SGML implementation.

This is not a course for understanding every nook and cranny of the standard; there are several areas of the standard that even the designers admit are not necessary. This course teaches you about real-world applications of some advanced syntax in the SGML standard, and how to optimize your SGML environment to get the most out of intelligent document management using SGML.

At least one analyst or programmer on an SGML implementation team needs to understand this material.
